Insurance

Most people discover the real shape of their coverage at the worst possible moment. The declarations page tells you beforehand, in about ten minutes.

## Start with the declarations page

The declarations page is the summary at the front of the policy. It names who and what is insured, the policy period, every coverage with its limit, and every deductible. The rest of the document exists to explain or restrict what appears on that page. If you read one thing a year, read this.

## A limit is meaningless until you know what it applies to

Per occurrence, per person, per year, per item, or in aggregate. Liability written as split limits behaves very differently from a single combined limit. Property coverage often carries sub-limits for categories such as jewelry, electronics or cash that sit far below the headline amount, and those are the ones that surprise people.

## Deductibles, and where a higher one pays off

The deductible is what you absorb before coverage responds. Raising it lowers the premium. Whether the trade is worth taking comes down to two things you can actually estimate: how much premium the increase saves each year, and whether you could cover the larger deductible out of savings without borrowing. Watch for separate, often percentage-based deductibles that apply to specific perils rather than the policy as a whole.

## Exclusions are where claims go to die

Exclusions are the losses the policy will not pay for at all. The recurring ones are wear and tear and gradual deterioration, failure to maintain, flood and earth movement under most standard property policies, business use of a personal vehicle, and property left vacant beyond a stated number of days. Read them while nothing is wrong.

## Replacement cost or actual cash value

Replacement cost pays what it takes to replace the item today. Actual cash value pays that figure minus depreciation. On a ten-year-old roof or a five-year-old laptop the difference is not small, and which one you have is usually stated on the declarations page in a single word.

## Extras worth checking for overlap

Roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, identity theft cover, equipment breakdown. Some are genuinely useful. Others duplicate something you already hold through a credit card, an employer benefit or another policy. Check before you add.

## What to do at renewal

1. Compare the renewal premium with what you actually paid last year, not with the quote you were shown.
2. Re-quote the same limits and deductibles elsewhere — not a cheaper version of them.
3. Update anything that has changed: mileage, drivers, occupants, remodeling, sums insured.
4. Ask which discounts you now qualify for, and ask in writing.

**Never guess on an application.** Coverage priced on inaccurate information can be reduced or rescinded at claim time. Correcting a detail today costs a fraction of a denied claim later.

This is general information about how these products work, not advice about your own situation. For that, talk to a qualified professional.
